Chicken Wire & Poultry Netting
Poultry and egg farmers rely on chicken wire and poultry netting to keep their brood safe and contained. There are several beneficial ways to put chicken wire to use:
- •Use wire mesh as a fence for poultry, keeping chickens in designated areas and blocking them from off-limits areas like the garden.
- •Create barriers to separate egg-laying hens from roosters and younger chickens from adults. Chicken wire can also be used to introduce new members to the flock, giving them space while they get acclimated.
- •Bury chicken wire around the pen’s perimeter to discourage foxes, coyotes or neighborhood cats from digging their way underneath.
There are two primary types of chicken wire fences, and each works well for different jobs:
Classic chicken wire: Also referred to as hardware cloth, this heavy-duty option is stronger than standard chicken wire. It’s hard to cut or bite through, so predators have a difficult time getting to chicken pens surrounded by welded wire. The durable material also prevents the wire from wearing out and causing injuries to your flock.
Welded wire: Also referred to as hardware cloth, this heavy-duty option is stronger than standard chicken wire. It’s hard to cut or bite through, so predators have a difficult time getting to chicken pens surrounded by welded wire. The durable material also prevents the wire from wearing out and causing injuries to your flock.
A third option is black plastic multipurpose chicken netting, which can be used inside a coop to separate chickens but shouldn't be used to deter predators.
Once you’ve selected the right fence wire or netting, there are several sizes to choose from. Standard-size openings of one or two inches are perfect for full-size birds. Size down to a smaller ½ or 1/8-inch opening for chicks to make sure they don’t slip through.
Whatever kind of chicken wire you choose for your chicken coop, Tractor Supply Co. has the poultry mesh and fence materials to get the job done.
